Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program

Your teen receives structured mental health support a few days a week, helping them recover from mental health issues.

IOP for Teens at BHC Alhambra Hospital: Why Choose Us?

The adolescent intensive outpatient program (IOP) at BHC Alhambra Hospital is for teens 13 to 17. Your child may step down to IOP after completing our partial hospitalization program (PHP). Or they may enter the program directly if they need more support than weekly therapy visits can provide.

Our IOP for teens conveniently meets in the evening so your child doesn’t need to miss school. It meets a few days a week from 6-9 p.m. You and your child choose the days that work best for them. The program is available in person or virtually. We provide dinner if your child attends in person.

Think of IOP as a step above weekly therapy. Your child attends several group sessions a week, instead of one-on-one sessions. They receive compassionate care from skilled mental health providers, including therapists and a psychiatrist. We treat your child like family.

At BHC Alhambra Hospital, you’ll find:

  • Skilled care providers: Staff members are trained to take a trauma-informed approach to help us provide a restorative environment for your child.
  • Individualized treatment: We assess your child’s needs and customize their treatment plan.
  • Structured environment: Your teen’s treatment schedule includes group therapy sessions, process groups and psychoeducational groups.
  • Virtual programming: Our outpatient treatment for teens is available in person or virtually. It takes place in the evening so your child can go to school during the day.

Mental and Behavioral Health Disorders We Treat

Our mental health providers can help teens recover from several issues, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Trauma

Treatments We Provide

We use different treatments to help your child recover. These may include:

  • Group therapy: Your child processes their thoughts and feelings in a group setting. This method helps them learn how to handle their challenges better.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): Also known as talk therapy or psychotherapy, this treatment helps your child identify and change unhelpful thoughts.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): A type of talk therapy, this treatment teaches your teen how to accept their circumstances and manage their emotions.

If your child may benefit from more therapy than IOP provides, our adolescent partial hospitalization program (PHP) may be right for them.
